Learn How to Register Your National ID (Cédula de Ciudadanía) to Vote Abroad
The Directorate of Migratory, Consular Affairs and Citizen Services of the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Colombia informs Colombian citizens abroad who wish to designate their voting location at a Colombian Embassy or Consulate—and who intend to participate in the 2026 Congressional and Presidential elections—that they may register their national ID (cédula de ciudadanía) at the corresponding Consulate or Embassy at any time, up to two months prior to the respective election date.
Regarding the upcoming electoral process, please note:
- For Congressional elections scheduled for March 8, 2026, the registration deadline is January 8, 2026.
- For Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections scheduled for May 31, 2026, the registration deadline is March 31, 2026.
Important Recommendations
- Verify your current voting registration status at: https://wsp.registraduria.gov.co/censo/consultar/
- Present your Colombian national ID (yellow card with holograms or digital ID) or your Colombian passport.
- Complete the registration process before the applicable deadlines.
Please note that voter ID registration is different from consular registration. Citizens who register their national ID for voting purposes will be able to cast their vote at the Consulate where the registration was completed. Registration may be carried out using the Colombian national ID (yellow with holograms or digital) or a Colombian passport. However, in accordance with Law 39 of 1961, the only valid document for voting is the original Colombian national ID.
If your ID is already registered at the Consulate or Embassy most convenient for you, no new registration is required.
